First Church Family:
It is my prayer that you are making it through this week’s heat wave. Wow, it’s been draining; and it’s brought out the Japanese Beetles! Beginning yesterday, my roses have been covered with them! I can remember my grandmother telling me: “David, in life you have to take the bad with the good!” But is there really anything good about Japanese Beetles? If you can think of something, I’d like to hear from you.
I will be going to Lake Junaluska Thursday and will be there at the Annual Conference with clergy and lay delegates through Sunday. John Davis is representing us there, as well. Please remember us, and the whole of our Annual Conference, in your prayers.
I shared in church this past Sunday that we have heard from Sharon Harmon, Executive Director at Yokefellow, and that local non-profit is in dire need of food to distribute. Because children are not at school across the summer, families in need can’t depend on school breakfasts and lunches.
Yokefellow tries to fill in the gap in the summer months. And its shelves need to be replenished.
While rice and pasta are always needed, the request made to us recently is for canned tomatoes and canned corn. I’m going to shop for those staples today. Would you join me, and bring them to the church – to be transported to Yokefellow?
Our Lay Leader, Jim Sponenberg, will speak at both services Sunday. His topic is: “The Role of Laity in the United Methodist Church.” Jim will be assisted in worship by our Marable Southall-Vess.
Their leadership is a wonderful blessing for our congregation.
My prayers are with you,
Pastor Dave
